Lwalwa Mask, DR Congo, Africa

H: 36 cm (14,2″),  W:21 cm (8,3″)

Lwalwa masks from DR Congo like this brilliant one, display a balanced composition. Typical characteristics for a Lwala mask are; an enlarged angular nose, a protruding mouth and narrow slotted eyes. These sharply delineated features give Lwalwa art an almost geometric appearance. The shape of the nose is modelled after different birds. The choreography of masked dances in which masks like this were a part of, was highly complex and had to appease the spirits of the ancestors and compel them to intervene.

Provenance: Private Belgian collection
