Grebo

Liberia

The Grebo tribe is a relatively unknown ethnical group living in Liberia. They have been culturally influenced by the neighbour tribes in the North named Kran and Dan. The Grebos are ruled by a tribe leader who is also functioning as the tribe’s religious chief. Their art is particularly characterised by their geometrically designed masks which have inspired quite a few modernistic artists. The masks are abstract and oftenly decorated with several sets of pipe or tubeshaped eyes protruding from the mask.
