Bronze Leopard Head, Benin
H: 22 cm (8,7″), W: 16 cm (6,3″)
Numerous bronze heads and figures were cast by the Yuroba tribe in Nigeria , where the new Oba (king) would dedicate an altar to his predecessor. The leopard was the sole property of the Oba and the royal animal. A mask like this one was worn either by the Oba or by the major dignitaries. A number of bronze figures and masks have been found in the Lower Niger area. This head mask may have been hung in a place of honour when not being worn.
Although not dated it is believed to be 60-70 years old.
